Using Rebuttals in Argumentative Essays

In college writing, most essays argue for a position. They are persuasive essays in that the goal is to get the reader to believe a statement is true by providing support. This is what distinguishes high school writing from college writing. I have mentioned in other essays that sometimes one already knows what they want to argue for before they begin writing their essay. However, sometimes college students find or think of support for a position and argue for it, even if it is not the position they would prefer to take! No matter which of these situations describes you, you should provide a counterargument and a rebuttal in your essay. A counterargument is a good argument which weakens or calls into question the thesis of your essay. Acknowledging such an objection and responding to it will make your essay more interesting to read and also provide better, well substantiated support for your thesis.
A brief structural outline of an argumentative essay may look like this:
1. Thesis statement
2. Support for thesis
3. A reasonable objection detractors may take (this is the counterargument).
4. A response to this objection that addresses it and shows it to be weak, misguided or incorrect.
Here is a simple example:
Cemeteries near urban expanses ought to be used as both public parks and a place to memorialize the dead. They offer a huge expanse of space in which persons could recreate, meditate and reduce stress by getting away to a quieter place. Most urban environments are short on open space and cemeteries provide it. It may be objected that it is sacrilegious to suggest that places set aside for the purpose of remembering and honoring the dead be used by the public for recreation. This may be the current mindset of society, but that alone does not make it correct. Many societies used to hold that animals were mere automatons and that they did not deserve any rights. Now, a different view is held and animals are better understood and respected. So too it is with cemetery use. It is time to get used to the idea that the living and the dead both deserve to use the open spaces we have.
In this argument the thesis is that cemeteries should be used as public recreational facilities. The support for this is that most urban environments do not have the luxury of space to have both public parks and cemeteries and the living need space for the maintenance of mental and physical health. The counterargument is that it is blasphemous to suggest that sacred ground be used for multiple purposes; that it goes against the values that we hold as a society. The rebuttal given is that society used to believe X but gradually came to believe Y. Therefore, while we may now see the idea of cemeteries used as parks as immoral, it is merely a societal belief that could and should change, just like our attitude towards animals has changed.
Clearly, a short example like this will not suffice for a college level paper. But the idea is to get the basic idea in your mind, and then you can flesh it out into 5 or 8 pages as needed. If you need to write a longer piece, you can fill in more at each of the four basic elements of the simple outline above. If needed, you can add a second or tertiary counterargument and provide a rebuttal to all of them. This will make your argument even stronger, provided you have thought correctly about both the rebuttal and the response.
Thinking of an appropriate response to an objection brought against your position can be difficult. When I work with students, I usually suggest that they first try and think about what they might say in response. Depending on the position and the background knowledge a student has, this may or may not render a rebuttal. Second, I tell students to do a little internet research and see if they cannot find information that may help them (just be sure to credit outside sources in your essay). Finally, talking about a paper with peers can often lead to ideas to be utilized in an essay. While preparing rebuttals to counterarguments are time-consuming and difficult, the result is an essay which sets itself ahead of most.…

Take Advantage of the Continuing Education Workshops

Take Advantage of the Continuing Education Workshops

Change is something the world will continue to experience for eternity. On the same note, it is important to understand that change does not happen selectively. It is across the board. As the world progresses, so do all the industries because of technological advancement. Some ways of doing things are being faced out as other change oriented techniques are adopted. For instance, news skills are imparted in the education institutions daily. For this reason, the syllabus is changing with introduction of new courses.

This does not mean that those who went through the previous system are half baked. What these individuals need is refresher training in order to acquire new skills. Therefore, it is important for adults to undertake the continuing education workshops. This entails training sessions for people who hold college or university training. On the same note, this form of training has already been adopted by some professions. Examples of these include nursing, law and teaching. The professionals in these fields enroll in the courses to refresh their skills in their line of specialization. It also helps them beat the competition especially for those who are in private practice. Additionally, since this change is inevitable, it is not strange to find organizations that are enlisting their staff.

The characteristics of these classes are different. Some may be in form of seminars, study online programs or even conferences. The duration of the workshops also differs. It can be a one day affair, weeks or months. When a person wants to enroll in the continuing education workshops, it is important to look for one that fits the profession the individual is in. The person needs to register, meet the requirements and the fee. These three factors depend with the course, the duration, the certification to receive once the workshop is over and the location of the continuing education workshop.

Their listings can be found online, in the universities, colleges or as advertisements on the newspapers. An individual needs to choose one that fits the objective. This should not be undertaken to get a certificate only, it should be with the aim of acquiring the skills.

Some of the features to look for include:

1. The location of the workshop- Is it too far such that you have to make accommodation arrangement? In some cases, when the classes or seminars are held in within the institution, accommodation is provided.

2. The length – You need to understand this because it can affect your schedule especially if your employer cannot grant you a study leave.

3. The certification – If you are doing this just to acquire skills for your own benefit, the certificate you will receive may not have a great impact. If you expect it to have an impact in your workplace and your C.V, make sure it is from a registered body or organization.

4. The fee – Consider the charges included in the fee structure. Are there additional fees you are supposed to pay in order to sit for the exam or get your certificate? The amount should also be within your ability.

Above all, make sure you meet the registration requirements and you submit your application in time. These continuing education workshops will give you a new lease of skills in your career.

CPA Continuing Education – Online Accounting Courses

CPA Continuing Education – Online Accounting Courses

Many professional careers require further education beyond the initial training and licensing. Some careers will offer a license that is essentially good forever, but this is rare in most industries. Things change, and in order to be the best at your career, you need to be able to get the CPA continuing education that you need on a regular basis so that you are informed about the latest and most critical changes and trends in accounting. There are many ways that you can take classes, but the internet is often the preferred source for today’s CPA continuing education seekers.

The internet makes training easier than ever before. You can do everything at your own pace and on your own time, allowing you to get the CPA continuing education that you need without having to make time in your busy schedule or worry about excessive traveling when you’re not able or willing to do so. You can learn the same things that you would learn in a typical course, but from the comfort of home and often for a much more affordable cost. There are a few things to keep in mind, though.

-Make sure you find a reliable and credible CPA continuing education provider. There are so many different services out there, and they are not all created equally. You need to do whatever it takes to make the most of your business, and don’t allow yourself to settle for less than the best.

-Track your continuing education requirements and accomplishments so that you don’t take the same course twice. In many instances, you will have to learn certain things at certain times, which means that you have to pay careful attention to the courses that you choose.

-Don’t take this training for granted. Many people think that they can wait until the last minute and squeeze in their CPA continuing education at once. Instead, as soon as your license renews, you should be figuring out a schedule to space out your training over the license period so that you aren’t cramming at the end or missing the deadline.

Forethought and Training Makes Managers

Forethought and Training Makes Managers

Senior management in every industry is well-known for setting-up our best skilled workers for failure. It is as if we are specifically trying to sabotage our own companies by reducing the workforce skill level and using poor management to try to fix it. A fancy new title and a raise does not a manger make. A top-notch management selection process and training program is the only road to ensure future success.

Leaders Make Great Managers:

The best worker does not make the best manager, the natural-born leader does. Though scholars continue to argue the finer details, it is widely accepted that “leaders are born and managers are made.” Leaders are followed. The directives of Managers are carried out. The Leader is the person spreading news from the grapevine, teaching trade tricks, and from whom co-workers seek advice. At breaks, the Leader can be found telling “there I was” stories with an attentive audience and organizing the weekend fishing trip or bar bash. The Manager is the person given that title by executives to be in charge of people, projects, and money.

In theory, anyone can be taught to manage well. Managers can be taught efficiency, organization, project flow, and even to earn the respect of those they manage. Managers, as the theory goes, cannot be taught how to lead. Though it is possible that the best worker is also a natural leader, this is rarely the case. Instead of looking to the firm’s best workers to serve in open management roles, consider promoting and training the natural leader. Management selection processes should begin pre-hire with an eye on identifying potential leaders. These employees should then be observed in their current role for signs of leadership and future advancement.

Tiered Management Structures:

Think large when developing the structure of management. All large companies were once small. So, instead of waiting until the company is large and then having to revamp the entire reporting chain; develop the structure at the outset. It is better to have a structure with unfilled positions, or those not currently needed in the smaller organization, then it is to remodel the entire structure at a later date to adapt it to the growing firm.

In some industries, the lowest level of management is the Shift Manager, Department Director, or Section Chief. In construction, we refer to this position as Foreman, Job Supervisor, or Superintendent. Each firm must chose these titles carefully and the reporting hierarchy with which they are associated. For the purposes of this article, let’s assume that the person who manages workers directly is called the Department Manager (DM). The Department Manager keeps the work flowing, assigns tasks, coordinates with other departments, ensures items are in-stock, and briefs the client, all while still working alongside their subordinates to facilitate the day’s activities. Department Managers report to the person who manages a number of departments, a position that is primarily office and paperwork intensive, usually called the General Manager (GM). GMs, in turn, report to a member of the Executive Staff, usually the Chief Operating Officer (COO).

It is not uncommon to further break up the management levels of DM and GM into subcategories. For example, the DM category could be sub-divided into: Junior Department Manager, Department Manager, and Senior Department Manager. A Junior DM may be the term used to describe a new entry into the management ranks who works under the direction of a DM or Senior DM. A DM would be an experienced manger with a bigger workforce and larger job assignments. Finally, a Senior DM would have the most experience at assisting with employee training, x-large projects, and those jobs requiring specialized skills or in dealing with detail-oriented clients. The Senior DM would likely run the largest or most complex department. The GM ranks could be similarly divided.

It is also wise to have pre-management positions that introduce potential entrants to the ranks without the accompanying official responsibilities. Thus, an Assistant Department Manager would serve as a normal crew member most of the time; but would be available to take over a portion of the project as needed by the DM. Additionally, they will fill-in as acting DM when the DM is on vacation or off work for personal reasons.

Management Training is Essential:

The most successful restaurant-chain in world history, McDonald’s, is the brunt of many jokes. They are, however, so successful because they are experts. Not only are they experts at “flipping burgers,” their world-renowned Hamburger University is a benchmark for educating management trainees on operation procedures, customer service, cleanliness, and business development. Similarly, Disney, United Parcel Service (UPS), Dell, and many others have been recognized as best-in-class for management and/or customer service training.

Unfortunately, many other industries have the opposite distinction. They are recognized …

Yoga Teacher Training for Diabetes

Yoga Teacher Training for Diabetes

When you attend a 200-hour yoga certification course, you are often trained to work with athletic types. After a yoga instructor begins teaching, he or she addresses the most common health problems. Sooner, or later, an instructor will have a student who is a diabetic. If you didn’t cover special populations and ailments in your foundational teacher training, it’s no problem, but now is the time to work on your continuing education. Just so we’re clear, continuing education is part of keeping your mind active for life and there is no one course with all the answers to the puzzles of life.

What are the best postures we can teach to diabetics? Flowing sequences come to mind first, but not every diabetic is ready to begin practicing Sun Salutations (surya namaskars) and vinyasa sequences from the start. These means, we have to research, consult a mentor, and possibly modify the routines we learned at foundational training. Depending on the health of your student, all asanas may have to be modified by using a chair and establishing a restorative practice.

Diabetes is a serious disease that affects the way the body metabolizes food. Diabetics don’t produce adequate amounts of insulin for cells to be able to take in the glucose that our bodies produce. This incurable disease lasts a lifetime. Although it can be controlled through proper diet, exercise and medication, there is nothing that patients can do to eliminate the disease. If it isn’t treated properly, diabetes can lead to other health concerns, such as cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, nerve damage or gangrene. People with diabetes can, however, live a normal, healthy life.

Today, more and more people are being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, which means the body isn’t producing enough insulin. There is a common perception that the most common reason why people get Type II is often due to poor diet, obesity and a lifestyle that doesn’t include exercise. This is not always true, you could be fit, lean, eat right, and still have Type II. So, let’s avoid stereotyping because anyone can become a diabetic. Walking, surya namaskars, and a regular yoga routine can usually help eliminate many of the causes and symptoms of diabetes. The gentle nature of asanas and the deep breathing included with the poses can result in lower blood pressure, better digestion, weight loss, and an overall healthier body.

My suggestions for any asana are modify when needed. If you never learned to teach with props, you should take a continuing education course that will help your skills. Yoga teacher training courses can cover the full spectrum of special needs that our students have. Here are three of my favorite asanas for diabetics, but there are many more to choose from.

Downward Facing Dog

Begin on all fours, with palms flat on the mat, fingers spread, and the hands below the shoulders. Push up and back, creating an inverted ‘V’ with your body. Heels can rest flat on the mat, or be raised off the mat a bit. Pull the belly in, push down into the mat with your hands, and point the tailbone up towards the ceiling.

Big Toe Pose

Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Slowly bend from the hips, lowering the head toward the thighs. It’s okay to keep a slight bend in the knees. Reach your hands down to grab your big toes with the thumb and forefingers of each hand. Release the head and neck, allowing the weight of your upper body to pull you into a deep stretch.

Triangle Pose

Stand with feet wider than shoulder width on the mat, toes pointing forward. Turn one foot about 90 degrees, keeping the other foot pointing forward. Keeping the hips squared forward, raise both arms to shoulder height. Slowly lower the upper body to the side of the body with the turned-out toes. Bend from the waist and reach with your arms. Place the bottom hand next to the foot, rest it on the calf, or use a block for support. Reach the opposite arm up toward the ceiling. If it’s comfortable on your neck, turn your gaze up toward the ceiling.

Conclusion

As a yoga instructor, nobody expects you to have all the answers, but you should maintain contact with a source or a mentor. Don’t make false promises and make sure you do diligent research before you work with yoga students who have special needs. There are many circumstances that can contribute to any ailment. As a yoga teacher, it’s important to keep your students safe.

Tax Breaks From Hiring the Unemployed

Tax Breaks From Hiring the Unemployed

One of the many benefits for businesses that retain consultation from enrolled agents is keeping up with new tax legislation. Knowing about added tax laws permits a business to capture financial advantages. The continuing education enrolled agents complete annually is always updated to changes in the income tax statutes.

Among the important tax laws implemented in 2010, two provide benefits to businesses that hired new employees. Like all matters with the IRS, there are specific rules to follow. This is common ground for tax professionals with enrolled agent certification. Obtaining beneficial tax treatment often requires professional assistance to understand the rules. From the beginning of preparation for enrolled agent careers there is training to gain familiarity with IRS procedures.

In order to qualify for the employee tax breaks, a business must have a new employee who had previously worked fewer than 40 total hours during the 60 days prior to being hired. In addition, hiring relatives for employment doesn’t qualify for the tax breaks. A business can’t terminate an existing employee in order to hire a new one simply to claim the credit. But the tax break is available to businesses replacing voluntarily departed employees or those terminated for cause.

Otherwise, there are no other restrictions. Workers are not required to have even been previously employed. A business is eligible for the tax breaks from hiring a recent college graduate with no employment history. The hired workers can even be former employees who were part of a previous lay off-as long as they were unemployed for 60 days.

The first tax advantage is that employers may offset their portions of Social Security tax on the wages of an eligible new employee. This covers wages paid from March 19 to December 31 of 2010. The employee share of Social Security tax is still withheld from wages and remitted by employers. Businesses who failed to correctly account for this benefit when filing quarterly wage reports can amend them to receive a refund.

The second tax break allows a business credit for each new worker still employed after one year. The employee’s wages must have not decreased significantly during the year. The credit is the lower of $1,000 or 6.2 percent of the employee’s wages. Since eligible employees hired in 2010 will complete one year of service in 2011, this tax credit is captured on 2011 tax returns filed in 2012.

Action was required before the end of 2010 in order to receive these tax breaks. But many business that added staff during that year are not aware of the tax legislation or how to capture the benefits. Business that find an enrolled agent have assurance of gaining from these new laws and all other types of tax advantages.

College Tips You Can Start Using Today!

Going to college is a dream that many parents have for their children and that many students have for themselves. It takes a lot to get into college so it is important to make sure that you can successfully navigate your way through 4 years of college. This article can help you orient yourself, set priorities and create a plan for success.

Always plan time to study and keep a set schedule for doing so. After you have received your class schedule, it is best to schedule your study time. With a class and study schedule mapped out, you can create the kind structure that will help you get through each day and maximize your time.

A great tip that will help you succeed in college is to carefully plan out your course load each semester. You don’t want to get overzealous and pick way too many hard classes at once. You’ll barely be able to keep up, and you won’t be capable of submitting your best work.

Avoid studying for big college exams the night before by taking in a lot of caffeine or other stimulants. While these things can keep you up and able to study for longer, they will make you very tired in the morning. After using chemical stimulants for a while, you will need more and more and that can be damaging to your overall physical and mental health.

Know as much as you can about the career you’d like to get into before even applying for college. You will know that the college that you are going to has the classes that will best prepare you for that career. Speak with an admissions director to be sure that they offer the classes you have to take.

Visit the dorm before deciding to live there. You may discover that you don’t want to live in that environment. Not only that, but you may find that you prefer one dorm over the other. Make sure you will get the choice you signed up for, and make sure you have a contingency plan in place if you chose a single room but end up in a quad.

Stick to your studies. College can be a fun time, with lots of new experiences, but it’s crucial to remember why you’re there. Take the time to ask teachers and other students for help, and make sure you get your homework done when you need to so that your grades stay strong.

After you sign up for a checking account, make sure that you do not leave without getting the free checks that most establishments offer. Do not pay for extras. You may be surprised at how few checks you will use over the course of your four years in college. It is simple enough to get more if you need them, but you don’t want to waste money if at all possible.

As you well know, college is a dream for parents and students alike. It marks the end of child and the beginning f adulthood as the student takes on adult responsibilities and makes their own choices. This article was designed to help you make the right choices for your college experience and to get the most out of your college years.…
