Be sure to eat well while in college. The term “freshman 15” exists for a reason. Make sure to be mindful of your eating. Stay away from fast food, junk food and other terrible choices. Although it may be cheap and quick, this kind of food is not nutritious.

Eat breakfast on test days. A fruit, a yogurt and some toast is all you need to remain focused. Your stomach can be a huge distraction when you are trying to take a test. At least eat something small to keep from being distracted.

Hop on the bus. It may not take any longer than driving yourself. You save time because you are not looking for parking. You won’t have to spend money on parking and fuel. It’s environmentally friendly, too.

When thinking about housing arrangements for college, be sure to give careful consideration to whether or not you will need your vehicle. Highly urbanized environments might prove challenging places to find free parking. You may struggle with paying insurance, gas, and registration, especially if you don’t have a job.

Buy your textbooks second-hand. The cost of new books is high. If you are already paying a fortune for college, you probably need to save all the money you possibly can. Many sources online sell textbooks affordably. Used books are much cheaper than new.

Don’t buy books unless you’re sure that you will need them. You may find that you don’t actually need the required books at all. For internet classes, this can be especially true. Sometimes, the analysis you find online or get from your teacher will suffice.

Try registering for classes that you are interested in instead of opting for “easy” classes. You can be greatly rewarded by stretching yourself. You will get much more out of the education you pursue.

Buy textbooks secondhand. School books are expensive and new ones can cost a small fortune. You can get used books and save a lot of money.

High school reputations mean little in college. Most of your new peers came from similar backgrounds and will not be impressed by your accolades from high school. Push yourself harder and try some new things instead of doing the same things you did in high school.

Techniques for Finding an Online Tutor

In the world of education, virtual learning is constantly on the rise and the preferred method of learning for most students in the 21st century. It is very important to know that not all virtual classrooms are equal. Therefore, individuals must have a game plan in place when finding online tutors.
There are three techniques that individuals should consider when selecting virtual tutors. These techniques include the following:
1. Pay Attention to the Tutor’s Background: Whether a tutor conducts tutoring sessions on-ground or online, it is very important for prospective clients to focus on the tutor’s training and tutoring experience. A great way to assess the tutor’s knowledge is to ask specific learning questions regarding the reason in which one is seeking tutoring services. For example, individuals could ask questions on how he or she would approach a learner with a specific learning situation.
2. Check Out the Virtual Classroom: Most online tutoring programs should have a demo in which prospective learners can utilize to see if their learning needs can be met. The best virtual classrooms will allow learners to interact with their online tutor. For example, there are some virtual classrooms in which allow learners and instructors to share documents, speak using a microphone or even a webcam.
Individuals who discover that there is only a whiteboard and chat feature should make sure that they check around and compare tutoring services with other online tutoring providers. In education, learners will do better when all four learning modalities are stimulated. These learning modalities include the following: visual; tactile; kinesthetic; and auditory learning styles. In other words, learners want to be engaged in their tutoring sessions and tutors must be prepared to meet these learning needs, as well as, select a versatile virtual learning platform to conduct tutoring sessions.
3. Ask about the Recording Feature: The best feature about virtual classrooms is that they are recorded. In other words, every chat or action is recorded in real time, which can provide valuable information to learners and parents to document the learners’ progress and hold each individual accountable. Online tutors can provide this information for learners upon request. If individuals have selected an online tutoring company, they can ask the authorized representative for this information. Please keep in mind that individuals are only able to gain access for only tutoring sessions that involve them. While there may be a policy in place for the number of recorded sessions allowed to be obtained, it is well worth the effort to have this type of information available for one’s own child or oneself.
The best way to find an online tutor is to locate one in one’s area or who can service your area. Chances are, individuals will find a plethora of qualified tutors who can conduct online tutoring sessions. By using these techniques, individuals are bound to find the best fit for either child’s or own learning needs.…

How A Training Provider Can Offer Quality Service In Continuing Education

How A Training Provider Can Offer Quality Service In Continuing Education

The purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer. The market place dynamics are changing and the customer has evolved over time. In the past the market place had less players and there was limited competition. The customer was more trusting and not choosy. But things have changed, the market place is increasingly fragmented and more competitive. The customer is more knowledgeable and demands a higher level of value from service providers.

Today, competition for adult returners, people needing retraining and updating and school-leavers has changed things. Spoiled for choice and with expectations of a better deal than was offered in the past these customers are now in a position to force the pace for change. The necessity to react quickly and favorably to inquiries from prospective customers and then to meet their needs with quality service creates an urgent requirement for increased responsiveness and improved efficiency as a pre-requisite for survival.

As a training supplier, you can do the following things in order to meet the needs of your customers.

First, as a supplier you need to review the market by contacting people in public places, support and referral agencies, employers and other businesses and finding out their training requirements.

Secondly, the supplier needs to prepare training and developing learning opportunities to meet the demand led needs of individuals and groups such as returners to education and people seeking professional and commercial updating and retraining.

Thirdly, he should develop a customer service center staffed with qualified people experienced in handling initial inquiries. Then, introduce an appointment system for people seeking advice, guidance and counseling.

Fourthly, the supplier needs to utilize testimonials and success stories reported by former learners. These tell how the provider helped individuals achieve their targets and gain competencies needed to get where they are today within their chosen occupational area.

Fifthly, to better serve adult learners and those with special learning difficulties and other special needs, the training supplier should work with customers and help them to make important decisions about their training and education.

Finally, the supplier should improve communications between trainers and support staff. Instill an awareness in all staff of the content of others jobs and the problems these people solve or overcome.

In the long run, it is the satisfying learning experience that will bring people back again and again to take continuing education courses from the training provider.…

Persistence Is Key

Whether it is your chosen sport, online tutoring or raising children, I believe you must have persistence to achieve results. Without persistent effort success will be absent.
The above statement is the result of a small yet thought-provoking event that occurred in my life last weekend and the motivation for this article. My wife, Jacqui, and I are expecting our first child and over the last couple of months (we’re in the third trimester) we have conversed considerably about how our parenting style will be, our morals and mostly how we believe events will unfold in our household (It’s all about getting on the same page). Up until last weekend I would have been more than happy to let others know what I felt about how to parent in different areas (not thinking I know it all), however one of Jacqui’s friends has changed this for me and reinforced the idea of persistence as an extremely obvious choice in the production of results.
The conversation over some fish and chips by the beach turned to Jacqui’s friends’ 2 year old daughter and her potty training. Now I can appreciate how difficult it must be to teach a young child to use the potty for the first time, although I didn’t feel the reaction was warranted when Jacqui told her friend what plan of action we had discussed to use for our child. It was like one of those hold in the laughter, how na?ve, what could you possibly know about it reactions. Not being one to back down Jacqui simply mentioned that we have other friends you have had great success potty training in the particular method suggested.
As a couple we are not one to judge other parents on their methods however it seemed obvious to us at the time that the couple with the results acted with persistence from an early age, where as the friends having trouble seemed more reactive to circumstances. Basically the potty success came down to putting the child on the potty after each toilet from an early age. That way the child got accustom to sitting on the potty and started to make an association between the potty and going to the toilet.
Reflecting on the conversation has leaded me to realize that any area of my life that I enjoy success in has been the result of consistent effort of a pre determined plan/idea. I have taught for 10 years and am involved in online tutoring, and if there is one area where students who achieve success and those that don’t differ, it’s persistence. A sunny weekend, some snapper and chips and parenting conversations leaded me here but persistence will take me anywhere.…

Continuing Education Critical, But Often Mandated Ongoing Education is Out of Control

Continuing Education Critical, But Often Mandated Ongoing Education is Out of Control

Most would agree that licensed professionals need to go through ongoing education in order to stay up on their craft. And many believe that by doing this regulators can make sure they do not break the law. This is all fine and good, except that often regulators are making laws so quickly, they are stifling the very enterprises they are trying to keep above board and in compliance to help the clients, consumer, and customers. At some point too much ongoing education or continuing education causes a problem and let me explain.

If a seasoned professional is spending all their times studying for tests to comply with rules and regulations, then obviously they are not working during those many hours of study. Often we find that ongoing education courses which are required are the equivalent of three units in college, and sometimes these happen once per quarter. A professional could easily go out of business during a recession because they are so busy studying to make sure they can maintain their license and they don’t have time to get out and do sales.

In this case it is putting the professional out of business, and there seems to be a small education lobbying industry that is that has come into play – call it the Ongoing Education Industrial Complex if you will. This is where those that administer the tests sit in rooms with regulators, and legal representatives and come up with the new laws, thus guaranteeing them a captured audience of students and test takers to comply.

At a time in our economy when we want small businesses to do well, the last thing we should be doing is making more and more mandatory tests preventing them from doing their job. Yes we need full compliance with regulations, but at some point we need to stop making more rules, and realize that we cannot regulate morality, and if we try, we are hurting most of the good participants in the industries, and it is likely that we will not be preventing any crime just because we have instituted more ongoing education.

This is something we need to think about and consider.

Far too often we have regulators sitting around and making new rules and regulations, when they have never participated in an industry. And sometimes we have industry associations, which are filled with the big boys on the block, the larger companies who send their attorneys to these rule-making sessions. And they create more rules and regulations, and ongoing educational requirements to put up barriers to entry to their smaller industry competitors.

It is easy for someone in academia, or a consumer rights group to demand more ongoing education and rules, but often these rules are not applied correctly to protect the consumer, and much of the ongoing education is nothing more than busy work, rote memorization, and we have the same dilemma as we have in our schools with no child left behind laws. I hope you will please consider this.…

Private Tutoring – What Should I Charge?

Many different factors govern the going rate for private tutoring. The good news is that if you over-price your services and don’t attract students because you seem too expensive, you can always rethink your fees. Conversely, if you start off underestimating your fee for private tutor you can always increase it. Still, it helps to get it right from the outset and there are various ways to calculate the value of your private tutoring services.
Find out from agencies and tutoring websites what other people with similar qualifications are charging for private tutoring services.
Evaluate what you offer in your private tutoring service. Obvious factors to consider include your qualifications and experience. If you are offering private tutor by means of the internet, include existing expertise in delivering educational help online as an additional skill.
Consider what your subject is worth in the private tutor marketplace. Clearly, homework help will command a lower rate than GRE prep. Similarly, helping school age learners with geography won’t pay as much as economics tutoring for MBA students.
Think of the preparation time involved (including administration). If you’re offering conversation classes in a language you will probably have less to prepare than if your private tutor involves devising and assessing assignments, for example. Some private tutor jobs demand more personalized attention than others, and hence more prep time.
Estimate your overheads, if any. If your private tutoring service is delivered online then your overheads will be lower than if you commute to learners’ homes.
Track time efficiently. When you start out in private tutoring be rigorous about recording how much time you spend on tasks and set your fees accordingly.
Think of the bigger picture. It makes sense to set your fees lower for a learner who is seeking weekly private tutoring sessions for a year than for someone who wants a month’s worth of catch-up tuition.
Things To Bear In Mind
You are entering a marketplace in which rules of supply and demand apply. You may have a doctorate and vast experience in teaching math, but there are lots of other people offering math tutoring. With times especially tough right now, people will make compromises. For the sake of savings, they may well decide that someone with an M.Sc. and less experience will do just as well.
You may be worth it in an ideal world but don’t price yourself out of the market. On the other hand, if you’re ridiculously cheap people may wonder whether you offer a sub-standard private tutoring service.
When building in costs don’t just pass them on to the client. You will need to invest your own money in your private tutoring business. If your private tutoring online includes interactive quizzes and puzzles that have taken you hours to create, that’s part of honing your skills and developing your ‘product’. You can’t expect learners to pick up the tab for it.
Money is important but it isn’t everything. It’s not worth being greedy and in any educational enterprise you should expect to give a bit extra as part of the service. There may well be occasions when students need a bit of additional help and support. Be generous, within reason, and remember that you are dealing in people’s futures, not flogging consumer goods.…
