Helping Students with a Disability
Speaking from personal experience and having had 3 of my 4 children born with learning disabilities, I can share with you some tips and tricks as well as frustrations. I was always an A student and when I married and began having children, it never occurred to me that the daughters and sons of very intelligent, educated parents could be learning disabled. I have one daughter who excelled in school and another who struggled with math concepts from junior high and up. I have two sons, one of whom has severe ADHD coupled with learning disabilities and the other who has problems decoding words. All of my children are very bright and intelligent. That fact is very evident if you have a conversation with any of them. Helping students with a disability is the responsibility of the school, parents and other professionals in the community. Tutoring for students with learning disabilities is essential.
Tutoring for Students with Learning Disabilities
Children with learning disabilities deserve as much of an opportunity at success as those who don’t have them. Working diligently with teachers, counselors and other professionals in the community is a start, but getting your child in touch with a tutor can be a God send. You need to find a tutor who is very patient and creative to enable your child to succeed. Learning disabled children are as intelligent as other children and tutoring them is not much different than tutoring another child. LD kids have trouble demonstrating their “smarts” in the classroom because of some problem with their “hard wiring” that prevents the message from getting through the way it would get through to others. Their listening skills can be weak and they need more time to understand and complete their work. LD kids tend to be disorganized and “forget” either what they’ve been assigned or the books or papers they need to take home to complete assignments. Spelling can be a challenge for these kids as well. Students with learning disabilities tend to be able to express themselves better orally rather than in writing.
With a learning disabled child, their learning can be affected because of problems with attention span, memory, language skills, execution of what is learned, reasoning and perceptual/motor skills. These children learn best when they are taught with a multi-pronged approach, including visual, auditory, verbal and tactile opportunities. Tutors cannot “fix” the child, but can offer the opportunity to explore various styles of learning to allow the child to develop strategies to help themselves.
As stated earlier, the tutor must be patient, but also positive and very supportive. It can be a learning curve for both the child and the tutor while exploring learning styles. It is crucial to keep the student involved and not spend too much time talking to him/her. By concentrating on processes rather than the end result, the child will eventually become accustomed to using the process and it will hopefully become automatic.
While you many find that results are slow, your child will make progress with a tutor who keeps your child very interactively involved with learning. You may notice after a while that you child no longer makes homework excuses and actually enjoys learning. A tutor can have a very positive impact on a child’s life, with great results like better grades and higher self-esteem. Results like these will influence your child’s life in all areas.…
Helping Students with a Disability
Students come across many difficulties on a daily basis while trying to comprehend all of the information that is thrown at them. This is no more so true than in the field of chemistry. Many students are taking their first steps into an advanced science class and can get instantly lost without someone to lend a hand. A chemistry tutor can be that helping hand and help your child to more easily digest the information and retain it in a way that it will make sense to your child.
Up until this point in your child’s academic life science was just a general class where most things were just pretty much glossed over without going into any great detail. Chemistry changes that. For almost every student that needs to take any type of advanced science classes chemistry is going to be the first stop along that path. Brand new subjects can be overwhelming for anyone and a chemistry tutor will be able to make it seem much less daunting of a task.
So how exactly do you figure out if your child is going to need a chemistry tutor?
1. The first place to look is of course the most obvious, your child’s report card. Falling grades in chemistry or a chemistry grade that seems to be consistently lower than the grades he gets in other classes should be taken as a sign that he needs some help.
2. Does he rush to get all of his other homework done on Friday right after school but his chemistry book stays closed on his desk all weekend? Let’s be honest, no kid likes homework. But if he is consistently avoiding homework in one subject then he is most definitely having a problem in that subject and could benefit from a chemistry tutor.
3. Almost as obvious as a bad report card is a note from his teacher. If you get a note from his teacher telling you that he is having problems in chemistry class or requesting you to come in and meet with the teacher then you need to take the situation very seriously. His chemistry teacher may come right out and suggest that you get him a tutor and may even be able to suggest someone.
4. Is your child home schooled? Many parents are home schooling their children these days but as the children get older and the subjects they need to be taught get more and more complicated many parents are finding themselves trying to teach something that they don’t understand themselves. A chemistry tutor would be a very good solution to this problem.
5. Grades in advanced classes like chemistry are an important consideration when it comes time to get into college. If your child has aspirations of going to a selective university with tough admission standards it may be of use to hire a chemistry tutor to help him improve his grades even if they are already good. Even students at the top of their class can find ways to improve their grades and themselves with help from the right chemistry tutor.…

No matter if you are still holding a regular teaching job in a school or have already retired from an active teaching profession, you can make money by tutoring students. Sometimes, this type of calling is more fruitful than teaching in a school. Tutoring students is your chance to apply your teaching technique to it fullest. And because personal treatment is considerably more enhanced in the interaction between a private tutor and a student, students often tend to learn better from tutoring than in the classroom.
There are many ways for you to make money and announce yourself as a tutor in the community you live in. One way is to identify children in your community who are not achievers. If you taught at the community school, this should not be difficult to do. In case you know the parents of the children in question, you can nicely open up the topic on one of the occasions that you meet with one another in a social gathering, whether during Sunday worship or at school programs.
When you start to make money tutoring, you will discover the subjects you are really good at teaching. Little by little, enhance your techniques and methods for improving student comprehension. Remember the success of your tutorial program will determine if you are going to continue to make money and more money at that from your tutorials.
Very often too, tutors learn as they make money. In fact, some tutors claim that they learn more than their students. This is because with every school year, new knowledge is cropping up for subjects, new techniques are discovered and old methods are improved in teaching. To make money on tutoring involves constantly updating yourself on the subjects you cover. This ensures that your methods and your knowledge do not fall behind and below the level of the school’s.
In the matter of tutorial fees, you need to make money using the current rates among people engaged in the same thing. Try to keep your rates at the safe median or average level. You have to be competitive but never astute. Your rates should not give people the idea that you are making a business instead of a living of tutoring. The fees you charge should make money but not be an issue. People will want to send their children to you because of the effectiveness of your tutorial methods, not because of your prices.
Additionally you can conduct tutorials over the web. You might even organize classes via a video conference facility that can be installed on your computer and the computers of your students. This is an excellent alternative to house-to-house tutorials which only allow you to work with one student at a time. In this arrangement, you can deal with four or five students at the same time, thus giving you more time to devote to personal matters the rest of the day. However, to reinforce the learning of the students, you should have personal consultations once a week.
On that last note, you might even say that to make money tutoring on the web is a better alternative to teaching in school and could develop to a full blown business for you.…

Some students have difficulties in mathematics in general. They find it difficult to comprehend the materials in most mathematics courses. However, more students appear to struggle in Geometry than in any other mathematics course. The reason is because Geometry is fundamentally different from most other mathematics courses.
Geometry is very different from Algebra I and Algebra II. For example, Geometry often requires students to visualize abstract objects. Students that are not visual learners therefore have difficulties mastering some Geometry concepts. It is much easier for most students to visualize a line than to visualize a polyhedron.
Another reason why students often struggle in Geometry is because Algebra courses often do not focus as much on proofs and reasoning as much as Geometry courses do. In many schools, students are first introduced to the ideas of axioms and postulates in Geometry courses. Algebra courses are often primarily based on memorization and basic equation solving strategies rather than proof formulations. Students who are already struggling with other Geometry topics feel an additional burden of trying to deduct these proofs.
Often, Geometry is taught in only one year while Algebra is taught in two years. Therefore, Geometry courses often have to teach many diverse topics in a short time period.
One solution to helping students better understand Geometry is to mix Geometry and Algebra courses. This would allow students to be able to both have more time to think about Geometric concepts as well as to learn some helpful Algebraic Geometry techniques. Another solution is to have a professional geometry tutor work with the student throughout the year.…
