Persistence Is Key

Whether it is your chosen sport, online tutoring or raising children, I believe you must have persistence to achieve results. Without persistent effort success will be absent.
The above statement is the result of a small yet thought-provoking event that occurred in my life last weekend and the motivation for this article. My wife, Jacqui, and I are expecting our first child and over the last couple of months (we’re in the third trimester) we have conversed considerably about how our parenting style will be, our morals and mostly how we believe events will unfold in our household (It’s all about getting on the same page). Up until last weekend I would have been more than happy to let others know what I felt about how to parent in different areas (not thinking I know it all), however one of Jacqui’s friends has changed this for me and reinforced the idea of persistence as an extremely obvious choice in the production of results.
The conversation over some fish and chips by the beach turned to Jacqui’s friends’ 2 year old daughter and her potty training. Now I can appreciate how difficult it must be to teach a young child to use the potty for the first time, although I didn’t feel the reaction was warranted when Jacqui told her friend what plan of action we had discussed to use for our child. It was like one of those hold in the laughter, how na?�ve, what could you possibly know about it reactions. Not being one to back down Jacqui simply mentioned that we have other friends you have had great success potty training in the particular method suggested.
As a couple we are not one to judge other parents on their methods however it seemed obvious to us at the time that the couple with the results acted with persistence from an early age, where as the friends having trouble seemed more reactive to circumstances. Basically the potty success came down to putting the child on the potty after each toilet from an early age. That way the child got accustom to sitting on the potty and started to make an association between the potty and going to the toilet.
Reflecting on the conversation has leaded me to realize that any area of my life that I enjoy success in has been the result of consistent effort of a pre determined plan/idea. I have taught for 10 years and am involved in online tutoring, and if there is one area where students who achieve success and those that don’t differ, it’s persistence. A sunny weekend, some snapper and chips and parenting conversations leaded me here but persistence will take me anywhere.

How to Make a Lesson Easier

No matter what subject you’re teaching, or whether you work at school or give private lessons, students (or a student) may become quite bored at your lesson. It’s not always easy to keep the attention of the students, to keep them focused and willing to learn new information.
I’m a teacher, a private tutor and a student myself, so I’ve had enough of opportunities to watch my colleagues at work and try some methods on my students. I’d like to share some tips that will help you to make your lesson easier, reduce the tension and make the learning process flow smoothly, so students won’t feel bored afterwards.
My subject is English language, but I think my advice will be useful for any teacher or tutor.
1. Switch activities
Before starting the lesson, make a quick review of the things that need to be done. For example, you need to do some writing, listening and speaking. Try to break these activities in halves and mix them up: it will be better for the student to write a little, then switch to another kind of activity and then go back to writing. The student(s) will most likely grow weary if they remain involved into the same activity for a long time; they won’t learn the material so well; and their attention will suffer as well. When time comes to begin another task, the students won’t have enough energy and they’ll do it worse.
So try and break all your lesson activities into smaller parts and interlace them with each other. It will help your student(s) to stay focused and they won’t grow tired of monotony.
2. Make pauses
Give your students some time to relax and catch their breath. You may think that the lesson is short, and there’s not enough time to do everything that was planned, but if you keep your students in constant tension and hurry them up, they will – voluntary or not – reject some information coming from you. If they’re tired or overstrained, they will start checking their cellphones, looking at the windows or just idly staring at the walls. They will take their time for rest anyway, so it’s better than you give them a minute or two to clear their thoughts. Such intervals can be introduced after every 15-20 minutes of a lesson.
Tell your students a joke, a small story or an episode from your teaching experience, let them stretch and chat a little, ask them some random questions – anything to make them relax a little. This way they’ll concentrate on the next activity much better.
3. Be friendly and praise them when you can
Teachers and tutors often think that it’s better to be strict and demanding at the lesson. While it helps to keep up discipline, it may also make your students too shy and unwilling to communicate. Tell them a couple of good words if you see they’re doing well; choose a bit easier task for the ones that seem to fall behind the class – it’s always better to help students feel more confident and stimulate their wish to learn more and work harder.
If you use these simple methods, your classes will have a nice, friendly atmosphere, and it will be easier for the students to focus. Your explanation will fall on eager ears, the students will remember and learn much more, and they will be always looking forward to your classes.

Your organic chemistry professor probably gave you his office hours sometime at the start of the semester. Whether this is just an hour or two every week, these are very, very valuable to you. In this article I will show you why and how you should utilize this time and make an effort to visit the professor during office hours.
The first reason, applies to any subject, not just organic chemistry. The typical science class has hundreds and hundreds of students. So many, that your professor probably doesn’t even know who you are, or your name.
However, if you are continually utilizing the free resource provided by your professor by visiting during office hours, he will get to know you as a diligent student and will be more likely to give you the ambiguous points, or to grade the exam in your favor. Not due to favoritism, but rather because he will see that you are putting in an effort and are not just a student who comes and takes the test.
The second and most important reason is your organic chemistry professor is the very guy who teaches the information. He is the one who will likely be creating your exam and grading your exam. That means that whether he realizes it or not, when he teaches the material, when he uses examples during lecture to explain a concept, he will likely use examples similar to what he will place on the exam. That’s because even though he tries to keep it independent, he’s still following a single train of thought or following the same train of thought when teaching and creating problems and so will likely create similar problems for the exam compared to what he shares during lecture
But in addition, if you go to office hours and ask your professor to explain a certain concept or to help you out with a problem assigned in the homework, the way he shows you how to solve this problem during a private session is the way he wants you to approach this type of problem; not only your homework but also on the exam.
During these sessions, professors may even make up additional problems to help you study and understand the information. These additional problems, made up for you, may subconsciously be similar to those that will appear on the exam.
Last but not least, your organic chemistry professor is a teacher of organic chemistry and that means during office hours you are getting very professional, high value private tutoring provided by the school. So how can you possibly turn down an opportunity like that?

Your Child May Need a Physics Tutor

Almost any journey is made much easier if you have help from someone that has been down that same path before and can guide you in the right direction. This is definitely a sign that he is having difficulty with the class but for some reason is just not able to ask for help. 5. Maybe you have exactly the opposite problem and your child is bored because he has advanced way past his class? If you have a child that has dreams of going into the aerospace industry then an excellent idea would be to find him a physics tutor that help him in studying at his own pace and advancing on when he is ready without having to wait for classmates to catch up. Give him a head start on the competition for that next seat into outer space.

Under-Performing US Kids – Grave Concern For Parents & Educators

In the article titled “U.S. Teens Trail Peers Around World on Math-Science Test”, Washington Post elaborates the state of US students. CNN echoes the same in its article named “U.S. students behind in math, science, analysis says”.
These are just some of the articles that explain the growing concern among parents and educators in the United States. Isn’t it ironical that a country that is the most developed in the world fails to keep up with its counterparts as far as the school educational system is concerned?
A country’s future depends on the development of its children. Someone has rightly said “Our children are our only hope for the future, but we are their only hope for their present and their future”.
According to the American Institutes for Research (AIR), the scores and rankings of 12 nations in the 2003 International Mathematics Assessments for Grades 4 and 8, US did not stand anywhere close to the top
US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan did not shy from speaking the harsh truth in front of a room full of Math & Science experts of the National Science Board “We are lagging the rest of the world, and we are lagging it in pretty substantial ways, I think we have become complacent. We’ve sort of lost our way”.
Developing nations like South Korea showed better results in the tests. All these have not alarmed just the academia in the United States, but also the business world that has started questioning America’s future on account of its faulty education system.

It is time parents and educators sit together and ponder over the current scenario and work out ways to improve the same. Last but not least, let us not sing to the tunes of the No Child Left Behind Act. I am sure school administrators voice the same opinion. Call a direct mailing house to do a search for all homes with high school age students in your zip code. Then do a mail out. If it’s ACT/SAT time of the year, make ACT/SAT preparation your top priority in your mail out.
#3: Brochures–Leave professional brochures at your pediatrician’s office, dentist’s office, toy store, etc., anywhere and everywhere where moms and dads of school age children congregate. Of course, you must ask the owners of these facilities permission to leave the brochures before doing so.
#4: Give Speeches-PTA groups, Churches, and business groups always welcome guest speakers. Faculty in-service meetings are also a good place to give a guest lecture.
